THIS WEEKEND - Summer is almost over -- which means, remarkably, that the movies actually get worse. Studios release all their sure-to-be stinkers just before Oscar season, treating moviegoers to such dreck as the Matthew Perry-Liz Hurley "comedy" Serving Sara and Undisputed, the prison boxing movie with Ving Rhames and Wesley Snipes. Also opening today is Andrew Niccol's (Gattaca, Truman Show) Simone. Al Pacino, Hollywood satire...sounds good, right? Well, it did on paper. All the previews, however, have looked perfectly dreadful. CS is on the road in Chicago this weekend hoping to catch some higher-brow fare like the Wilco documentary, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, and Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People. Check back next week for reviews.

The post below was scheduled to be published Friday morning -- apparently, I didn't hit the right button. My apologies to anyone wondering why the hell I didn't write anything on Friday. As it turns out, I did not make it to the Wilco doc, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, during my weekend trip to Chicago. I did see 24 Hour Party People and Miguel Arteta's The Good Girl, with Jennifer Aniston and Jake Gyllenhaal. Look for those reviews later in the week. This afternoon I'll post the CinemaScoped Critics & Readers Poll results of the best film of the year so far, and the most eagerly-anticipated upcoming film.
